The Iowa State Patrol says Harlan Police began pursuing a suspected drunk driver south on Highway 59 Wednesday afternoon. Sergeant Jim Wissler tells NewsRadio 1110 KFAB Harlan Police then asked for assistance.
Wissler says the two motor vehicle enforcement officers from the Iowa Department of Transportation responded. He says as their Chevy Tahoe was northbound on Highway 59 the chase was coming at them from the north.
Wissler says the DOT vehicle did a U-turn to try and get in front of the fleeing car and conduct a rolling road block. The suspect's car slammed into the back of the Tahoe and caught fire. The driver died at the scene.
The DOT officers were taken to the hospital in Harlan, but their injuries are not believed to be serious. The names of the victim and officers have not yet been released.
